Town of Mount Royal

My office is here, at 1257 Laird Boulevard.

Schools

Families have a choice, in French or in English. At the elementary level, Saint-Clément-Est and Saint-Clément-Ouest, two French-language schools of the Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys, send their grade 5 and 6 students to Académie Saint-Clément. On the English side, Carlyle offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, and Dunrae Gardens teaches in French immersion.

In high school, École secondaire Mont-Royal offers the Middle Years Programme, and École Pierre-Laporte has music, languages, science and sports profiles. If a school drives your choice, check its territory before you make a promise to purchase.

Public Security

It is one of the great advantages of Mount Royal. The Town has its own Public Security service, reachable day and night at 514 734-4666.

When I go on vacation, its patrollers go around my house twice a day and keep my mail safe until I come back. This home watch service is free for residents: you sign up online or by phone.

Parks, recreation and the new sports centre

The Town maintains close to thirty parks and more than 70 other green spaces. Mohawk Park has 12 tennis courts and 6 pickleball courts, Connaught Park is home to the Town of Mount Royal Country Club, and Danyluk Park has the arena, the outdoor pool and a skatepark. The Reginald-J.-P.-Dawson Library is on Graham Boulevard.

A new sports and community centre is under construction near Danyluk Park: indoor pool, gym, training rooms and art studios. The Town expects it to open in spring 2028, according to a preliminary schedule.

Getting around and shopping

Ville-de-Mont-Royal station, in the heart of town, is on the REM, with a direct ride to Central Station, and to Deux-Montagnes and the West Island. According to the Town, downtown is less than ten minutes away by REM, and Montréal-Trudeau airport about fifteen minutes away by car. Highways 15 and 40 run right by.

For shopping, Royalmount is within the town limits, with its shops, restaurants and skating rink, and the Jean-Talon Market is a few minutes away.

Before you buy here

In Mount Royal, as a general rule, all exterior work requires a permit, even replacing a door or a window, colour included, putting up a fence or a heat pump, or cutting down a tree. The Town reviews each project against the eight house styles in its planning by-law. If you are planning work, let’s talk about it before the promise to purchase.

Another detail that surprises newcomers: without a permit, you cannot park on the street between midnight and 8 a.m.

The area in a few facts

Town of Mount Royal was born from a tunnel. The town was incorporated on December 21, 1912, on farmland, alongside the railway tunnel dug under Mount Royal. The first train went through in 1918, and today the REM uses it, with the Ville-de-Mont-Royal station in the heart of town and Canora station at its southern edge.

The plan was drawn in a single stroke by landscape architect Frederick Gage Todd, starting in 1914: a grid of streets, wide diagonal boulevards that meet at the station, and parks everywhere. The Model City of Mount Royal has been a National Historic Site of Canada since 2008.

The houses tell three eras, which the Town recognizes in its planning by-law: the faubourg and garden-city styles from 1915 to 1935; New England, Canadian and English manor houses from 1935 to 1955; then cottages, bungalows and split-levels from 1955 to 1975. In the 2021 census, 63% of homes dated from 1960 or earlier, and close to 78% of residents spoke both French and English.

The neighbourhood at a glance

Town of Mount Royal is first and foremost a town of owners and houses. In the 2021 census, close to two households in three owned their home, and more than half of all homes were houses, detached, semi-detached or row. That is the opposite of the City of Montréal, where apartments and renting dominate.

It is also a town of families. One household in three has four people or more, twice the Montréal share, and one resident in five is under 15. French and English are part of daily life: at home, 43% of residents mostly speak French and 28% mostly speak English.

  • 65%of households own their home, compared with 36% in Montréal
  • 60%of homes have three bedrooms or more
  • 31%of households have four people or more
